Make Affluence History

Check this site out. It's an interesting site that works well in conjunction with the Make Poverty History campaign. It's Make Affluence History. It's about personal responsibility, not just lobbying for governments to relieve debt.

If you want to see how rich you are in comparison to the rest of the world, go here. You'll need to convert your earnings to British Pounds which you can do here.

If you missed out on the Make Poverty History concert tickets, you can still go to the festival the following day. That's free! Details here.

And don't forget to keep supporting the breast cancer site here. You can also link to other sites from there to support those in need without it costing you a cent! Just a few seconds!

Did you enter it in right? Coz i am the 817,620,779 richest person in the world. In the top 13.62%.

Hey Aaron! Me AND my boyfriend are BOTH 107,565 as well!

What?! I can't be that poor!

it reckons i'm number 107,565. even when i told it that i earn 20000000000000000000000000000 pounds per year (that is literally the number i put in). methinks it's not quite right.

ok, i've looked at the code for how they calculate it. you can't put a decimal point in (ie, use whole numbers only). if you earn over 200,000 per year (or if you put in a decimal so it gets confused), it automatically says 107,565 (that number is hard-coded into the script). if you earn less than 100, it automatically says 5,780,722,892.

so, if i now put my actual salary in (without a decimal point), it says i'm about 384,000,000. a bit more likely, but i'm not quite sure how much i trust their maths.

    the 200,000 and the 100 i mentioned are dollars. $200,000 = ~108,700 pounds.

Ah right! Yeah, I thought that too, so don't use a comma or a full stop.

So I guess that means me and Aaron don't have to scrag-fight for the lucrative 107,564 position

No, although I'd like to see it all the same!

a duel to the death with ferrets!

(Does that mean each of you dueling to the death against my highly trained ferret swordsman? Or dueliing each other using ferrets dipped in starch as swords? Who can tell?)

You made up the concept dude, you can decide

Is starch that you use in washing the same as the starch that potatoes are rich in?

    Hello Megan,

I remember you, I think, we discussed the history of the bible, is that right?

I'm with Rob about the wealth calculator, I doubt the accuracy. Still it does drive home the point of how lucky we are in comparison to the rest of the world. I saw a great documentary recently called "Darwin's Nightmare". About a place in Africa where the first world meets the third world, which creates an interesting, revealing, contrast. It's a bit full on, which is inevitable with topics concerning extreme poverty.

Sounds interesting! I might look it up. Thanks for dropping by Owen. I think we did discuss the history of the bible actually. Very interesting!

Looking forward to this ferret duel!

I'm the 52,234,305 richest person on earth... and that doesn't include my hubby's salary. Scary.

Oddly enough, we live in a VERY affluent area and are considered a moderate income level. Because of this fact, my children constantly feel they're "poor." We struggle with this issue a lot... road trips to less fortunate places, reading about impoverished countries, etc., and stressing community service and charity. They take SO much for granted. We have to constantly remind them that we are blessed so that we may help others... not because we deserve it.

That's great that you are actively trying to expose them to different life situations. It's so easy to take life for granted when you are surrounded by affluence. Good on you for exposing your kids to how lucky they really are. Keep it up!

We Western Christians aren't immune from consumerism, are we? Go to Word or Koorong, and what do they sell at the counter? Useless trinkets; you know, the sort of thing you see on www.ship-of-fools.com under the "Gadgets for God." These things are either a bit of fun or crass and tacky, depending on your point of view. Either way, we don't really need that stuff to help us in our faith, do we? My five cents.

    I couldn't agree more.
