Writing Slump

I'm so disappoitned in my song writing as of late. I've been listening to so much awesome music and I just can't seem to write anything as good as what I'm hearing. It's rather disheartening. What kind of music do you guys like? Tell me your current favourite song, or few songs, and tell my why if you know why you like it so much. This might help in my research of how to write music.

It just has to come straight from your heart, you know? Otherwise, it just sounds trite. Sometimes, when I'm in a writing slump, I just go sit at the piano and "jam" a little. I just let my fingers do what they want to do. Eventually, something comes out.

Yeah, I feel the key to all my favourite songs is the melody is guided by the emotions. Not some generic tune with lyrics thrown in as an afterthought.

The Dumbing Down Of Love by Frou Frou
My Place In This World by Michael W Smith
Nakushita Kotoba by No Regret Life

Guru: are those songs you listed examples of what you DO or DON'T like??

I just started fiddling on Garage Band, obviously not quite as proffessional as what you are doing, but while I was trying to make an interesting little tune, I kept making tunes really similar to the music I had just been listening too. Maybe not listening to music shortly before writing music would help.

Maybe another idea in regards to inspiration, and I don't know if this'll help, but I would think it's easier to write lyrics when there's a reason for them. What I mean is I'm sure Andrew Loyd Webber found it easier to find inspiration for the feel and words of 'The point of no return'. Such a fantastic song, that I'm sure he couldn't have written without context.

Maybe you could do a theme album, proggression album (is there such thing?) or perhaps work with Guru for a Musical.

    Meh, I'm just greenlighting here.

    Currently listening to:
Last of the Mohicans - James Horner

Best lyrics in a song EVER:
Through heaven's eyes - Prince of Egypt OST

Thanks guys. That's all helpful. I actually managed to write a song in my head last night while I was at work. Yeah, i was working super hard... I got home and put music to it. I'm excited! it still needs polishing, but the basic idea is there. I'm so happy!!!

The bamboo in our back yard isn't growing, it's held together with wire, like a fake background, but it looks good. It's not in the ground.
